checking for the ADSL light
The following tutorial will guide you through how to check for the ADSL Light, also called ADSL Synchronisation on your modem.
Visual Cues for ADSL Synchronisation
All modems have a synchronisation LED of some kind. Most often this link is referred to as the following LED:
ADSL, DSL, WAN, LINK, INTERNET
For each of the tests you perform you should be checking that this LED becomes active on the modem.

Steps on how to resolve not having ADSL Sync
For all of these tests you should be checking for the LED to go solid. If it doesn't go solid, go onto the next test.
You don't have to follow it step by step - you can jump right to the end which might save you some time, but at least the long way you might find something small and simple that fixes it.
- If you have more than one phone line into your home (more than one number that rings at your house), check to make sure that your modem is on the right line. This is important as ADSL broadband is phone line dependent.
- Make sure the line is active and paid for. If your line is cut off for some reason you will lose your ADSL broadband.
- Check for dialtone on the line. If it hasn't been cut off (ie it should be working) then make sure it really is working! (especially if its a dedicated line that normally doesn't have a phone on it).
- Check your filters are okay. Sometimes filters can be confusing. They are usually labelled pretty clearly now but some of the older ones can be a bit vague. So just make sure they are on the line correctly. Need help? Click here.
- Make sure the modem doesn't have a filter on it (this causes the ADSL signal to be drowned out and you can't connect without this signal).
- Check the cables are all nice and firm. A bit loose in the socket is enough to cause a loss of signal.
- Try another cable - its wire and it gets worn from use like anything else.
- Try another socket - like phone cable, sockets are wire connections that can wear over time too.
- Test the modem at a mate's house. It doesn't matter who their ADSL broadband is with, but just give the modem a shot there (into a power point and a phone line is all you need to check for synchronisation). The aim of this test is to make sure the little LED comes on solid. Or if you have a second modem yourself give it a try on the line.
- Isolation test your setup.
If all the above have been checked and can be discounted please contact iiNet Support and report the fault. Please be sure to provide the results of all that you have tested, and any information that you can provide as to when you think the fault first started.
